You love portraits and want to improve the quality of your photos but don’t know where to start. Here are some notes to create beautiful shimmer photos when taken in the evening.
1. Make the most of natural light and artificial light
Photography is often likened to a search for light, because only light creates a beautiful picture. However, when the lack of light becomes a major obstacle, how do you overcome them? First, you need to find a place with lots of streetlights and neon lights to make your photos more colorful.
Joseph said: “When taking photos in low light conditions, I always use a focal length lens with a large aperture to capture more light.” I use the new Canon EOS full-frame mirrorless camera and the EF35mm f / 1.4L II USM with the help of a dedicated EF-EOS mount adapter. I set the shutter speed to 1/40 to capture more natural light. Even at night shooting, I was able to establish focus precisely thanks to the EV-6 low-light focus limit at the center focus point. ”
You can also use natural light to lighten your photo patterns. Joseph said, “The deep decorative lights also contribute to making the model’s face brighter.” This deep tone also creates a contrast with the cool tones of the background.
Tip: Take a sample photo and place the light cord close to the camera lens, or around the sample image. In the photo above, he keeps the decorative light cord close to the camera when shooting to create large bright spots.
One way to overcome low light conditions is to increase the ISO sensitivity. With the EOS R, you can capture quality portrait photos at night, when the ISO sensitivity of the device ranges from 100 to 40,000.
Joseph adds, “To get better quality photos, I have set the ISO sensitivity between 400 and 800. I can even adjust the ISO sensitivity faster thanks to the Multi-Function (M -Fm) has a custom dial, so I can easily adjust the camera to the desired level.
2. Using props
Adding a unique element to your night-time portraits with props, a bright surface that reflects the surrounding bright images also contributes to brightening the face of the photo model. In this picture, Joseph experimented with a prism and glasses worn by the photographic model.
“Try placing the prism at different angles, sometimes right in front of the lens to help reflect the face of the image. When I asked for the photo to put on my glasses, I was able to capture the moments when the decorative light was reflected on her glasses. ”
When using a prism, you focus on the sample and then gradually bring the machine to cover the prism image on the side of the lens. Rotate the prism and adjust the effect on the camera’s LCD monitor, adjusting until you find the desired effect for the photo.
Joseph appreciated the EOS R for helping him get more professional photos. “The camera’s FV (or AE) exposure mode makes it easier to shoot at night. It helped me adjust exposure settings such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO between Auto mode (AUTO) and adjust it directly in the same shooting mode. This shows that I can adjust the settings through the viewfinder without having to use the dial or LCD screen. ”
Taking photos from multiple angles is made easier thanks to the camera’s multi-dimensional flipping LCD screen. “When the model sat on the ground, I could flip the camera screen upwards to focus on her face more easily, instead of bending over and constantly looking at the camera screen.”
3. Better photos with bokeh effect
To end a night photo shoot, it is best to take a few photos with bokeh. Bokeh is the blurring or defocusing of the background, which can be achieved when you use the widest aperture and make sure there are lots of street lights behind the model.
Joseph added, “With the street lights in the background, night shots will bring out the bokeh patterns. If you want some blurry bokeh-like highlights, ask for a standing photo model where bright images are reflected from far away. The shallow depth of field transforms a bright image into colorful bubbles in the background. ”
The eyes can create or break a portrait. When shooting portraits, it is important that you focus on the eyes.
