JOB TITLE: Weaving Gallery Interactive Assistant

OVERVIEW:  The Weaving Gallery Interactive Assistant will support and guide visitors through an interactive weaving experience located in the Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dream' s weaving room. This role will be responsible for weaving space set up, materials prep, space clean up and reset, guiding volunteers, and interacting with the public.

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt                REPORTS TO: Associate Director, Interpretation

COMPENSATION :   $21.05 to $22.07 per hour, depending on experience

BENEFITS : As a temporary, non-exempt employee at SAM, you will be eligible for paid sick time accrued at a rate of 0.0385 per hour worked, access to SAM Savings & 403(b) Retirement Plan, and fringe benefits including two guest passes to SAM, access to fitness facility, Tier III AAM membership, discounts for SAM memberships, SAM Shop, and MARKET, and access to member rates for ticketed events at SAM.

HOURS : Employment period for this role is Oct. 7, 2024 to Jan. 24, 2025. Required in-gallery work will occur during run of exhibition, with a typical schedule of Weds-Sun. 10:30am- 4pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Warmly welcoming visitors into the space and guiding them through basic weaving techniques in an active, participatory Community Weaving Project
  • Share information about the Community Weaving Project with visitors
  • Replenish weaving shuttles and supplies
  • Prepare weaving shuttles
  • De-install and restring looms
  • Guide volunteers in assisting with preparation of materials and interacting with the public
  • Maintain organization and orderliness of the weaving space; coordinate regular deep cleanings with Facilities department
  • Assist with mending and finishing the community-woven tapestries
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Weaving or fiber arts experience is required.
  2. Strong customer service/public engagement skills is required.
  3. Teaching experience with diverse audiences a plus.
  4. Excellent oral communication skills; able to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing and in person.
  5. Able to work independently and in a team setting; ability to self-motivate.
  6. Able to take initiative, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  7. Excellent time-management, problem-solving, and problem-prevention skills. 
  8. Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail.
  9. Ability to work with co-workers, vendors, and volunteers professionally and tactfully.
  10. Ability to adhere to Museum policies and to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure : Work areas are primarily inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light to moderate background noise. Work is occasionally performed at other indoor and outdoor sites. 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Stationary Work :  Approximately 80% of time is spent standing or sitting in the weaving gallery area. Balance of time (approximately 20%) is spent moving around the work area. Occasional extended periods of standing may be required when assisting at Museum events.

Communication :  Clear and effective communication with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and co-workers is necessary.

Moving :  The ability to move up to twenty pounds on occasion is necessary for moving equipment and supplies.

Office Work :  Ability to effectively and regularly operate a computer, keyboard, and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machines and printers, and ability to inspect, prepare and use paperwork, files, equipment, and supplies is necessary.
