Job Description

Overview:

This Staff Assistant position requires a highly professional, collegial, and detail-oriented person, who is an excellent communicator and team player. This individual will work with two units: the Department of History and the Department of Political Science, both situated in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and located adjacent to each other in Old Main.

This is a Staff Assistant II position and is a full-time, in-person position, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

Responsibilities:
  • Support the departments in communication and outreach efforts, including communication with current students, potential students, and alumni.
  • Write, design, and proofread newsletters, event flyers, and social media posts.
  • Event planning, including advertising, room reservations, travel for speakers, etc.
  • Create course schedule each semester for History, communicating with faculty as needed for this purpose.
  • Daily office tasks, including scheduling appointments, coordinating meetings, and maintaining office equipment, working alongside other staff assistants in History and Political Science.
  • Greet visitors and answer telephone calls in a professional manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by the department heads of History or Political Science

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in an office setting or an associate degree/vocational training is required.
  • A working knowledge of office computing software including, but not limited to, the use of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • The successful applicant must be able to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and follow University policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of University-specific systems such as Banner, MyTime, etc.
  • Skilled with basic office equipment, including printers, copiers, and telephone systems
  • Familiarity with video editing and brochure design software.
  • Skilled in creative problem solving.
  • Good organizational skills.

Both Political Science and History are staffed by dynamic teacher-scholars with diverse backgrounds and deep knowledge in an array of fields. Both departments offer undergraduate and master’s level degrees. The History Department offers majors/minors in history, history teaching, and religious studies. It also offers minors in Latin, Greek, Classical Civilization, and Latin Teaching, and two master’s programs in History and Ancient Languages and Cultures. Political Science offers majors/minors in Political Science, Political Science Teaching, Law & Constitutional Studies, and International Studies.
