Merchants Insurance Group, a Northeast leader in Property and Casualty Insurance, has an exciting and rewarding career opportunity for a Sr. Corporate Underwriter to join our collaborative and dynamic Corporate Underwriting team in our Corporate Headquarters located in Buffalo, NY.

The Sr. Corporate Underwriter is a senior level subject matter expert for commercial lines underwriting. The Sr. Corporate Underwriter is primarily accountable to define appetite, guidelines, underwriting workflow and underwriting training for all commercial lines products. Responsible for the delivery of the discipline underwriting process in each assigned office. That includes exposure analysis, coverage analysis, portfolio analysis, loss analysis. This position is also responsible for the attainment of commercial lines loss ratio and production goals through underwriting referrals, quality reviews and training. This position is responsible for managing and successful completion of Home Office Underwriting Reviews, compliance management and reinsurance referrals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for developing and driving underwriting appetite, underwriting guidelines, training materials, and loss control requirement for new and renewal policies.
  • Assist Regional offices in their efforts to meet profit and production goals through the referral process, underwriting audits, training and loss analysis.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to the field and other corporate departments to achieve regulatory compliance. This includes testing our systems both automated and manual to insure we are in compliance with our filings and the insurance codes of the various states.
  • Monitor total insured vales (TIV) and catastrophe (CAT) exposure according to company CAT strategy.
  • Act as Project Lead or team participant on projects involving underwriting and loss control. Employ project management strategy, skills and procedures to meet project objectives.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Qualified candidates will have a 4 year degree or equivalent work related experience. Master's degree desired.
  • CPCU or other insurance related coursework is highly desired.
  • 10+ years line underwriting experience with underwriting management experience preferred.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills required.
  • Knowledge of local industry developments and trends.
  • Microsoft Office knowledge as well as the ability to work with internal company systems.

Merchants Insurance Group Pay information:

Merchants Insurance Group offers a competitive pay scale. The actual compensation will be determined based upon experience and other factors permitted by law. The pay range for this position is $85,872 - $126,000.
