Your Specific Responsibilities:

The WIC Breastfeeding (BF) Coordinator is an individual with specialized credentials and extensive experience helping mothers with complex breastfeeding problems. The BF Coordinator promotes breastfeeding as optimal infant nutrition and operates within the policies and procedures of the WIC program.

The WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator duties include, but are not limited to:

• Responsible as the agency Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE) and the BF Peer Counselor Coordinator.
• Assists WIC mother/infant dyads with complex breastfeeding challenges and provides follow-up breastfeeding support to participants. Refers mom to her or her baby’s health care providers for further assessment and medical care, as appropriate.
• Assesses, contributes towards the development of a care plan and counsels the mother/infant dyad with complex breastfeeding challenges. Communicates care plan to the rest of the WIC breastfeeding team, as appropriate.
• Acts on referrals from peer counselors and other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding challenges.
• Serve as a breastfeeding resource and mentor for WIC agency staff.
• Provide in-service instruction and training on breastfeeding education for staff and community partner(s) including the annual World Breastfeeding community event.
• Ensures the clinic environment clearly endorses breastfeeding, including updating bulletin boards and maintaining the nursing mother’s room.
• Promote breastfeeding within the community.
• Maintains lactation credentials and certifications and acquires ongoing continuing education to stay abreast of current lactation profession information and enhance skills.
• Attends and actively participates in monthly breastfeeding conference calls, monthly WIC staff and Florida Department of Health meetings.
• Performs monthly breast pump inventory for Martin County WIC, updates breast pump policy and issues equipment in compliance with WIC procedures.
• Reviews, analyzes, and reports on breastfeeding indicators at least quarterly including WIC Indicators, FL Charts and Healthy People national goals.
• Trains Peer Counselors (PC) and WIC staff per standardized curriculum. Provides PC communication including case consults, monthly meetings, and ongoing updates, as needed.
• Monitors Peer Counselor documentation including Employee Activity Report and FL-WiSE client records and review of assignments
• Timely and accurate data entry and written documentation including: FL-WiSE, Progress Notes, Loving Support forms, Employee Activity Reports in the Health Management System and timesheets bi-weekly in People First.
• Routinely communicates with the Public Health Nutrition Supervisor all relevant activities, requests, and updates.
• Attends conferences, seminars and workshops as assigned.
• Completes Florida Department of Health, WIC, and Breastfeeding trainings.
• Travel may be required, as needed. Private transportation and driver’s license is required.
• Emergency duty is required in response to or threats involving any disaster man-made or natural. Emergency duties include working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Experience counseling breastfeeding mothers and infants who experience complex breastfeeding challenges
• Breastfeeding Assessment and Care Plan Development
• Experience providing breastfeeding training and education
• Compassion and desire to help mothers resolve breastfeeding challenges
• Active listening, rapport building and communication
• Collaboration with other WIC staff and community partner(s)
• Literacy and Language skills appropriate to address the needs of a diverse population
• Proficiency in computer communication skills and applications.

Qualifications:

Mimimum:

• Minimum of one year of experience in counseling breastfeeding women.
• Certified as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), or is a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) willing to obtain IBCLC credentials.
• Have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or have completed a minimum of 8 college courses from an accredited institution in the Health Sciences (suggested coursework includes but is not limited to the following areas: Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Biology, Infant Growth and Development, Nutrition, Counseling Skills, Sociology, Introduction to Clinical Research, etc.). 
• Proficient in computer skills and applications.
• Must have the ability to be at your workstation on time on a daily basis to serve clients.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule. Some days may start at 7:30am, other days may end at 6:00 pm.
• Must have have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle. Mileage reimbursement is available.
• Must be willing to accept $25/hr
• Willing to work before, during and/or beyond your normal work hours in a Special Needs Shelter or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses involving any disaster or threat of disaster.
