DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the Executive Director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Strategic Planning, Innovation and Research (SPIR), Assessments and Analytics (SHAA) and SHW Administration (ADM).

Health Promotion Services (HPS) is responsible for campus-wide education, outreach and prevention efforts on a variety of health topics. HPS runs The Zone, a well-being space for students. SHW uses a public health model in conceptualizing the delivery of programs and services. HPS provides services related to alcohol and other drugs (AOD), gender-affirming care, smoking cessation, sleep, stress, sexual health, and mental health topics among others. HPS utilizes peer educators, health coaching, marketing and a variety of campus-wide campaigns to impact the students on a population basis. Additional programs are targeted to groups of students at higher risk on selected well-being topics.

Reporting to and in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Health Promotion Services, this position provides leadership in vision, planning, implementation, and evaluation of campus-wide health promotion practices in order to create an environment that promotes student success and personal development. Provides leadership in and make recommendations on the development, revision, and implementation of well-planned theory- and evidence-based interventions and outreaches. The incumbent will be a Health Educator who focuses on mental health, in addition to providing general health education for undergraduates, graduate and professional students. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, evaluating and continually improving workshops, outreach, presentations, peer leadership programs, and campus-based affinity groups that focus on health promotion and prevention activities. Must exercise good judgment, innovation and professional approaches/techniques to solve problems, make decisions and manage conflict.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced health education professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge of the health promotion and education field. Ability to interpret trends, define problems, conceptualize solutions and convert into practical applications. Knowledge of environmental prevention strategies and harm reduction strategies in health education.

  • Thorough knowledge of the design and delivery of related programs. Demonstrated program assessment, planning, and reporting skills.

  • Skills associated with both the development and delivery of health education programs and services. Skill to plan, develop, implement, and manage comprehensive health promotion campaigns and general health programs .

  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact effectively with diverse client groups. Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and patience, and to successfully interact with diverse population, including the community, medical providers, staff, patients and students. Skill to communicate effectively and appropriately with an emphasis on professionalism. Ability to relate effectively and sensitively to diverse, multi-cultural populations. Skill in working in a team setting, fostering cooperation and support from other staff.

  • Effective organizational skills. Skill in setting priorities and accomplishing projects. Demonstrated skill for detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated skills in public speaking.

  • Ability to analyze, interpret and respond to client needs. Skill in gathering, analyzing and synthesizing complex data for application in organizational strategic planning and health promotion program development. Demonstrated ability to create and implement student surveys and assessments; make recommendations for program planning and revisions; provide guidance for evaluation and outcomes reports for programs and activities; and collect and produce annual reports.

  • Experience in supervising and coordinating outreach activities. Experience in recruiting, training and supervising staff and volunteers.

  • Proficiency with use of computers and online programs and software, incluiding MS Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. All staff members are required to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment.

  • Complete and pass test/quiz for all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD and SHW on a timely basis.

  • As appropriate, submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix or current system in use, to report near-misses, process problems or patient or employee  injury events. Attend required trainings and refreshers for use and proper steps to follow.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate office computer and various equipment proficiently, including telephone, printer, copier, scanner and FAX machines. Thorough knowledge of business software, specialized applications and systems used in behavioral health centers / clinics. Demonstrated experience and competency with standard business equipment, computer technologies and a variety of software including system and networking software, Microsoft Office suite, email and a variety of web-based programs and browsers, with the willingness and ability to update and increase skills as needed to meet the goals of SHW.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
