The Environmental Policy Manager will be responsible for identifying, reviewing, verifying, and maintaining relevant environmental rules and regulations for Disney Cruise Line Shipboard and Island Operations. This role will read & interpret International Maritime Organization MARPOL Regulations and other applicable shipping rules, BMA bulletins, MEPC updates, and monitor the expansion of protected marine areas where the DCL fleet operates. This position will manage the IMO Carbon Intensity Index Regulation and work with our shipboard partners, our online reporting platform, and our verifier to complete the process yearly for our fleet. In addition, the Environmental Policy Manager will review and monitor regulations in any new geographical areas in accordance with our planned itineraries. The position requires the ability to take complex inputs and diverse perspectives to provide guidance to senior management around Environmental Compliance, Policy, and potential changes in operation.
This position reports to the Manager, Environmental Compliance.
Provide vessel and shore leadership the necessary information and guidance to meet international (e.g.,MARPOL), national (Port State and Flag state), regional/local (e.g. Alaska, European Union, ports, etc.), and company policies.
Develop and assist in implementing comprehensive environmental policies for Disney Cruise Line, to ensure compliance with all rules, laws, class societies and governing bodies.
Conducts waste vendor due diligence inspections as required.
Support shipboard and island audits for compliance with applicable laws, regulations and company procedures.
Represent Disney Cruise Line as required with Cruise Line International Association (CLIA), BMA, U.S. Coast Guard, CARB, ADEC and other maritime regulatory organizations.
Reviews weekly environmental reports from assigned vessels and follows up on issues noted as needed.
Develops environmental regulatory training as required
Sails regularly verifying compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and company policies.
Conduct Environmental related investigations as needed
Manage the IMO Carbon Intensity Index (CII) data collection and verification process – shipboard liaison, online reporting reviewer, and work with our verifier to make sure DCL is in compliance with all records and reports.
Lead and develop global and regional environmental matrixes ensuring clear, concise, and accurate guidance. Respond and action fleet feedback as necessary.
Mange the review and quality control of the OceanGuardian environmental compliance software. This includes the inputting of company environmental policies as well as review and actioning of fleet feedback.
Principal contact with global port agents and local authorities for gathering environmental compliance requirements for future itineraries.
Interpret all emerging environmental laws and regulations and develop policies that verify Disney Cruise Line® is prepared to comply with them.
Assist with development and implementation of SMS policies and procedures.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Marine and Technical Operations, Environmental Operations, and shipboard teams, to ensure policies are realistic, achievable, and integrated seamlessly into daily operation.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to verify the implementation and effectiveness of environmental policies across the fleet and private island destinations with a goal for continuous improvement.
Provide guidance and training to shoreside and shipboard teams to ensure comprehensive understanding of environmental policies and compliance requirements.
Investigate and address environmental incidents and compliance issues promptly, proposing corrective actions and preventative measures.
Review of the Safety Management System to update, make additions or remove items as necessary.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations and ensure their practical application.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey policies, procedures, and compliance requirements effectively.
Detailed oriented approach with the capability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
Demonstrated influence, mediation, communication, and public speaking skills with a high level of creativity and innovation.

Proven self-starter, recognizing when efforts need to involve multiple partners and decisions need to be made at other levels within the organization.
Experience developing environmental strategies with multi-discipline teams including operations, engineering, finance, public affairs, and other business partners.
Strong understanding of our guest/cast/crew experience as it relates to sustainability.
Demonstrated proficiency in business analytics, and business case development.
Ability to work in a constantly evolving marine environment, and a passion for learning.
3+ years in environmental regulation or policy roles, leading cross-functional teams to success.
Previous experience working within the cruise industry in an environmental capacity.
Strong organizational, presentation, and data analytic skills.
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, marine biology, environmental engineering or equivalent
Master’s degree in environmental science, marine biology, environmental engineering or related field.
